Shop 4 Good with Beam Impact: Mujeres Latinas en Acción

by Christina Almeida

At Pildora we believe that Living Consciously means bringing intention to all aspects of our daily lives. As a curated sustainable marketplace, that means looking at each step of the shopping experience to see how we can do better. We’ve partnered with Beam Impact to make supporting world changing organizations integral to the way you shop with us! Here’s how it works: shop and check out like normal, choose between four powerful non-profits, and Pildora will donate 2% of your purchase at no cost to you.

Each week of this month we will be highlighting one of the organizations we’re partnering with.

Mujeres Latinas en Acción

As a Latina woman herself, Pildora founder, Christina Almeida has a special plaace in her heart for Mujeres Latinas en Acción (MLA). As a woman led business, the importance of caring for and supporting fellow womankind remains at the heart of everything Pildora does. Our Beam Impact partner, Mujeres Latinas en Acción, has changed the lives of so many women. For that we are so grateful and so eager to support their efforts.

While a simple sentence can’t begin to describe the scope of MLA’s impact, in their own words, they are “a bilingual/bicultural agency empowering Latinas by providing services which reflect their values, culture and being and advocating on the issues that make a difference in their lives.”

Founded in Chicago in 1973, MLA is “the longest standing incorporated Latina organization in the nation,” and has impacted women’s lives through their comprehensive array of services that promote non-violence, reproductive health and leadership development. So, what exactly does that look like? And how can such large issues be addressed? MLA supports victims of sexual and domestic abuse by providing crisis intervention to stop a situation, post event counseling, therapy, legal support and medical advocacy.

To further their impact, MLA takes supporting victims of sexual and domestic abuse past physical and emotional recovery.  Through their Community Engagement & Mobilization Program, MLA mobilizes their community to speak out on issues of economic injustice, immigration, gender based violence, and women’s health. They also teach leadership skills as well as provide parent support to improve interpersonal relationships within families.  Mujeres Latinas en Acción provides so many other invaluable services, such as childcare, group counseling, court advocacy, supervised visitation services for low-income families in Chicagoland, and more. One program to note is Empresarias del Futuro (Entrepreneurs of the Future), an educational training program in Spanish for women interested in beginning or expanding their small business. The goal is obtaining financial independence, confidence and leading them on the road to freedom and happiness! Really, thats the goal of all of their programs. It’s women helping women find safety, succeed, and flourish!

Mujeres Latinas en Acción is always looking for volunteers across their programs. When you shop for good and choose to support Mujeres Latinas en Acción, our donation on your behalf will go toward funding a literacy workbook for an aspiring Latina entrepreneur as well as one hour of therapy for a Latina woman who is a survivor of domestic abuse.
