Shop 4 Good with Beam Impact: Plant With Purpose

by Christina Almeida

At Pildora we believe that Living Consciously means bringing intention to all aspects of our daily lives. As a curated sustainable marketplace, that means looking at each step of the shopping experience to see how we can do better. We’ve partnered with Beam Impact to make supporting world changing organizations integral to the way you shop with us! Here’s how it works: shop and check out like normal, choose between four powerful non-profits, and Pildora will donate 2% of your purchase at no cost to you.

Each week of this month we will be highlighting one of the organizations we’re partnering with.

Plant With Purpose

What Plant With Purpose understands is that poverty and environmental degradation are deeply connected, and one cannot be addressed without the other. This intersectional approach to global community work solves two pressing issues facing the world today: environmental degradation and rural poverty. Plant With Purpose’s programs equip farming families around the world to increase farm yields, heal damaged ecosystems, improve nutrition, and increase household savings and opportunities. To date, Plant With Purpose has planted over 28 million trees around the world. Their work also provides financial support and counseling, as well as spiritual guidance on the road to self sustainability.

In Mexico specifically, Plant With Purpose works to teach indigenous Mexican families in Oaxaca and Chiapas to plant vegetable gardens that increase their food production and incomes. Working at the intersection of sustainability and support for indigenous communities, Plant with Purpose has touched the lives of countless people in Mexico. Below is Juana’s story.

Juana, her husband, and their three children lived in Poblete, located in one of Mexico’s poorest areas which suffered from widespread violence. When environmental damage caused its farms to produce less food, families became more in need than ever. With so many workers unable to provide for their families, many community members had no choice but to turn to the drug trade. Suddenly, Poblete was dealing with the problem of both poverty and increasing violence and tension.

When Juana’s husband was tragically murdered, she became a single mother to three and was even more uncertain about what the future would hold. To respond to this crisis, a local pastor organized a Plant With Purpose group to address the lack of resources and environmental degradation. “Pastor Abundio helped us organize, and we started with twelve people,” Juana said.

In the Plant With Purpose group, the members began collectively saving so that they could begin to take out loans to invest in their gardens. A Plant With Purpose agronomist also came in to teach the group how to compost, conserve water, and use sustainable ingredients and practices. Now, Juana’s garden could easily feed her kids, and her crops were growing so well that she had leftover to sell at the market. As the group’s president, Juana oversees a garden bursting with lettuce, cabbage, chard, onion, tall stalks of corn and other organic vegetables. Families in Poblete today have increasing opportunities to earn money and provide food. Things continue to change for the better, but Juana knows that lasting change develops slowly and with intention.  Her goal for the future is to build a better Poblete for her three children.

Since they began their work, Plant With Purpose has seen incredible progress. On average, families working with Plant With Purpose cut their level of poverty by two-thirds. When you shop for good and choose to support Plant With Purpose, our donation on your behalf will go toward funding two hours of agriculture and economic development training for an indigenous farmer in Mexico.
